Development background
PAKITTE, a portion-sized package for condiments like mayonnaise and salad dressing, was first invented during the 1980s in the United States. At that time, Mitsubishi International Corporation in the US obtained samples of the original container and joined us in making proposals to manufacturers of food products. We established structures for development and supply of packaging materials and finalized the package specifications through repeated experimentation, and in 1987 we were the first in the world to begin commercial production of this type of package. In 1989, we developed the twin package type, which stored two separate condiments in a single package and made it possible to squeeze them out fully with a single hand, without getting dirty. In 1991 this design was registered as a utility model design, recognized for its innovative structure and ease of use.
Solution
Thanks to its highly convenient design that made it possible to squeeze out the contents easily with one hand, use of PAKITTE spread steadily, centered on convenience stores and fast food. While at first it was used mainly for contents such as mayonnaise and salad dressing, over time it came to be used for a wide range of condiments including jam, margarine, syrups for carbonated beverages, and syrups for yogurt. PAKITTE was regarded highly as a product in its own right, and at the Tokyo Pack trade show in October 1998 it was named Best Barrier Free Packaging based on the results of survey by the Institute of Packaging Professionals Japan. Furthermore, in 2003 it won the Good Packaging Award in the Japan Packaging Institute’s Japan Packaging Contest. Since then, a variety of new types of DISPENPAK products have been introduced as we have continued to meet the needs of the market. One example is the multi-dimple type, with improved opening shapes.
